Machine builders now have the power to allow operators to talk to the machines, and have the machine talk back. The key is to leverage what some are calling Small Language Models (SLMs) built right into a PC on the machine, such as the HMI or a PC control. These models are all free, mostly open source, and do not involve licensing or token fees if they run on a local machine.
