Hilscher North America has introduced the new comX 90CN, an embedded communication module designed to provide secure, multiprotocol industrial communication in devices with limited installation space.
Unlike the standard comX 90, the comX 90CN does not include pre-installed network connectors. Instead, manufacturers can position the physical network interfaces directly on their own device baseboard. This design provides greater flexibility when developing compact field devices, drives, robots, and other industrial automation equipment.
The comX 90CN gives device manufacturers greater freedom to design products around their mechanical requirements. By moving the network interfaces to the device baseboard, manufacturers can optimize connector placement, reduce space requirements, and simplify integration while maintaining the proven comX 90 technology.
Proven comX 90 technology in a flexible form factor
Based on Hilscher’s multiprotocol-capable netX 90 communication controller, the comX 90CN maintains the same core functionality as the established comX 90 platform. The compact module measures only 30 × 70 mm and supports multiple Industrial Ethernet technologies through firmware selection, including:
Industrial Ethernet:

- EtherCAT
- EtherNet/IP
- Modbus/TCP
- CC-Link IE Field Basic
- POWERLINK
- Sercos
The module also supports IIoT communication through OPC UA and MQTT, enabling device manufacturers to prepare their products for connected automation, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance applications.
Security-ready embedded communication
The comX 90CN includes the security functions of the netX 90 platform, including:
- Hardware-assisted cryptographic functions
- Secure Boot
- Certificate and key management
- User management
These capabilities help manufacturers address evolving cybersecurity requirements while integrating reliable industrial communication into their products.
The comX 90CN is available as part of Hilscher’s comX 90 communication platform, allowing customers to choose between a version with integrated network connectors and the new connector-free variant for flexible baseboard integration.
