Targeting emerging brands in the cannabis, wine, and brewery businesses where custom labels need to be printed on-demand, Canon introduced the LX-D5500 inkjet label printer to the U.S. market at PACK EXPO International.

The dye-based system can print 4-inch wide labels capable of a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi and speeds of up to 200mm per second in matte or glossy using roll or fan folded media.  Dye-based ink produces bright and vivid colors for a professional look, and the high-resolution printing allows for the sharp reproduction of high-density bar codes and small text.

In addition, because inkjet label printers only use the necessary ink for each the label size and design, it is more economical than thermal printers and reduces waste. And, since the printed information will not be recorded on ribbons, it keeps sensitive information secure, whereas thermal ribbons need to be discarded which can leave company information exposed.

In addition to product labels for small manufacturers, the printer is ideal for distribution and logistics labels, warehouse labels, and retail inventory labels, the company said.

The printer is available now in the U.S. for under $10,000.
