Welcome back to Package This, your friendly guide to packaging machinery! Today, we’re hot on the case of... case packing equipment.

Case packers are essential end-of-line machines that prepare your products for shipping. Whether you need machines to erect cases, load, seal—or do it all in one—there’s a case packer to meet your needs.

Today, we’ll explore some of the main technologies in case packing, from horizontal and vertical packers to case erectors, tray formers, and sealers.

Let’s get packing!

Top-Load Case Packer

Top-load packing is the most common method for case packing. Typically, products are loaded into a standard RSC case through the open top flaps. Flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid products can all be top-loaded.

Check out the G400 Gravity Top Load Case Packer from Fallas Automation: a simple, reliable solution for loading flexible bags into RSC cases, totes, or crates. It’s built for demanding environments, featuring NEMA 4X cabinets and durable 316L stainless-steel construction—ideal for washdown areas.

The Adabot-LV is highly versatile, capable of running up to three unique pack patterns on a single machine. Whether products are laid flat or packaged upright, it delivers a retail-ready finish. Once the case is full, the top flaps are folded and sealed, making it ready for stacking and shipping.

The Adabot’s compact design allows it to pick and place product on the fly with robotic features engineered for a deeper reach, helping your brand pack flexible bags into chosen patterns with consistency and precision.

Vertical Case Packer

For products that require both strength and precision—such as bottled goods, gable-top cartons, shrink-wrapped items, as well as sensitive pharmaceutical and medical device components—vertical case packers offer a robust and efficient packaging solution.

These systems ensure secure handling of heavier items and delicate products alike, meeting the stringent requirements of industries where consistency and compliance are critical.

Here we see the Pacteon Group’s ESS Technologies V30 Vertical Case Packer in action. This case packer integrates erecting, loading, and sealing on a single frame, with robotic pick-and-place features for adaptable product handling.

Critical movements are servo-driven for consistency and precision. Before opening, the case is justified to a zero point to ensure squareness during loading. Through the taping area, squaring mechanisms keep each case true during sealing—whether by tape or glue.

Intelligent software and automatic changeover simplify operation, allowing new case sizes to be set up quickly and easily through the HMI.

Other Essential Case Packing Equipment

  • Case erectors quickly form flat corrugated blanks into ready-to-pack boxes, keeping your line supplied with consistent, square cases.
  • Tray formers work similarly, creating sturdy, open-top trays ideal for cans, cartons, and shrink-wrapped goods.
  • Case or tray loaders are machines dedicated to the task of placing products into their shipping containers. Whether gantry-style or robotic, these systems accurately arrange, orient, and position products for consistent, reliable packing.
  • Horizontal case packers often handle lighter or more delicate products—like coffee bags, cookies, or small cartons—loading them gently from the side into RSC cases with precise placement.
  • The final step in case packing is always sealing: case sealers close and secure each box with tape or adhesive, protecting products for shipment.
