Some of your best customer stories are already happening inside your business. Engineers are solving difficult applications, improving equipment, adapting for new products, and developing ways to stand out to end users. Marketing’s job is to help customers understand that value.
Sounds easy enough, right? But engineering teams are focused on designing equipment, supporting production, and solving customer issues. Marketing teams are managing campaigns, supporting sales, preparing for trade shows, and creating content. Neither team lacks ideas or effort. More often, they lack the time and structure needed to consistently connect their work.
Engineering and marketing also approach communication differently. Engineers naturally focus on how a solution works, whether it meets the technical requirements, and what distinguishes its design. Marketing must consider how it can transform that information into something engaging for multiple audiences.
Those differences are not a problem to eliminate. They are strengths to combine. The following practices can help marketing and engineering teams create a more productive working relationship while improving the quality of the information customers receive.
1. Make engineering participation focused
The greatest barrier to collaboration is often engineering bandwidth. Asking an engineer to write an article, draft a case study, or produce marketing copy from scratch places the responsibility on someone whose primary role is not content development.
A more effective model is for marketing to own the process and ask engineering for a focused contribution. A 15- to 30-minute conversation can provide enough substance for an article, application story, product page, video script, or sales tool.
Marketing can prepare specific questions in advance: What problem was the customer trying to solve? What made the application difficult? How did the equipment address it? What is technically different about the solution? Which claims need careful qualification?

The marketer can then create the first draft and return it to the engineer for a technical review.
2. Bring marketing into the process earlier
Marketing is often introduced to a project after the equipment is complete or shortly before a launch. By then, the most valuable opportunities to document the work may have passed.
Earlier involvement does not mean marketing needs to attend every engineering meeting. Maybe marketing participates in selected product development meetings, has sightline into the project plan, receives updates when a project reaches an important stage, or is included when a new capability is being tested. This gives the team time to understand the story, plan the necessary assets, and ask questions, so when the launch happens, both teams are aligned on the real benefits and value.
Earlier visibility is important for trade shows as well. The teams should meet at the end of the year to review the next year’s trade show calendar. This way, they’re prepared if a machine requires modifications, and engineering can flag new capabilities that haven’t yet been demoed. Marketing also benefits from understanding what can realistically be shown and which features will be most meaningful to attendees.
3. Create a process for capturing stories on the plant floor
Some of the strongest content emerges from custom or unique orders. When engineering or sales flags one before the machine leaves the shop floor, there's time to capture photographs, video, interviews, and application footage."
Factory acceptance tests can provide similar opportunities. With the customer’s approval, an FAT may offer a chance to document a system operating under realistic conditions, explain a technical feature, or gather material that can support future sales conversations.
This turns existing engineering work into a steady content pipeline without asking engineers to help create marketing materials. The technical story is documented as it happens rather than reconstructed months later.
4. Translate the same technical value for different audiences
A CPG engineer may want speeds, tolerances, and controls information. A maintenance professional may focus on accessibility, reliability, and changeover. Operations may care about throughput, labor, and ease of use. Purchasing and leadership may be evaluating TCO, service support, and return on investment.
Engineering provides the technical foundation. Marketing helps organize and translate that knowledge so each audience can quickly recognize the relevance to its role. A technical data sheet, short demonstration video, application article, and executive-level ROI summary may all describe the same solution, but each serves a different purpose.
The most effective content retains engineering’s accuracy while helping the customer see how the product solves a challenge that directly affects their role.
5. Build content around how engineers actually research
When engineers begin researching a solution, they are usually looking for an answer—not a campaign. They may start with Google, YouTube, AI, or a supplier website to determine whether a solution exists and whether a supplier has relevant experience.
That makes clear, searchable, visual information especially important. A short equipment demonstration, an application photo, a technical diagram, or a page answering a specific question can provide the immediate confirmation an engineer needs.
Long-form resources still have value, particularly as the buyer moves deeper into evaluation. Dense paragraphs and broad promotional statements can slow down a user who is trying to answer a specific technical question during early research.
6. Use AI to reduce the workload, not replace expertise
Generative AI can make technical content development faster, particularly for lean marketing teams. It can organize notes, turn engineer bullet points into a first draft, and adapt approved content for different formats. However, AI-generated technical content still requires careful review. A hallucinated specification, unsupported performance claim, or inaccurate application statement can damage trust quickly.
Use AI to reduce repetitive drafting and formatting; keep engineering responsible for the technical review. AI helps teams move faster, but it does not replace the subject matter expert.
7. Create a regular feedback loop with sales
Marketing and engineering alignment becomes even more valuable when sales is included in the exchange.
Sales owns the customer relationships and hears the questions buyers ask, the objections that slow opportunities, and what they request after meetings and trade shows. Those insights help marketing identify content gaps and help engineering focus on the technical details that matter most. A regular feedback loop does not need to be complicated. Marketing might ask sales to share the five most common questions received each quarter. Engineers could help answer them, and marketing could turn those answers into website content, sales tools, videos, or follow-up materials.
The same process can improve outreach to engineers at CPGs. Engineers tend to respond more positively to concise, relevant communication than to broad promotional messages. A follow-up email that references a specific trade show conversation, application challenge, or technical requirement is more useful than a generic email blast.
Different working styles can produce a stronger result
Marketing and engineering do not need to think or work alike. The goal is to create a process that allows each group to contribute its expertise without adding unnecessary work.
The impact reaches beyond content. It sharpens trade show readiness, strengthens sales conversations, and helps customers evaluate complex solutions more efficiently.
Engineering creates the solution. Marketing communicates the value of that solution to the end user in a targeted, engaging way. When the two teams work together consistently, the result is more than better marketing; it’s a stronger path for technical innovation, business growth, and company cohesiveness.
